English
At Allfarthing, we aim to help children develop skills and knowledge that will enable them to enjoy reading and writing as well as enabling them to communicate effectively and creatively with the world at large.
We recognise and value the importance of nurturing, building and developing all aspects of English for our pupils, from their arrival in school to their transition to secondary school. This includes the development of skills in spoken language, reading and creative writing as well as vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling and handwriting. These skills are taught across the curriculum as well as in focused English, guided reading and phonics sessions.
Allfarthing children have many exciting opportunities to extend their skills and understanding in English such as author visits, participating in theatre workshops, entering a wide range of writing competitions and taking part in the Wandsworth Spelling Bee and Spoken Word performance poetry competition. World Book Day is an important whole school celebration involving all members of the school community.
In Early Years we are using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds to teach reading and writing at Allfarthing. This new scheme will be rolled out to our Year 1 children from September 2022.
