Allfarthing School

Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Events

At Allfarthing we provide our children with many ways to develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC).

SMSC is not a separate subject that is taught explicitly but an aspect of learning that is present in lessons across the curriculum as well as in our extra-curricular activities and should also form part of our behaviour in school. Some lessons lend themselves more easily to SMSC development such as PSHE and RE however, we also aim to develop SMSC through our behaviour expectations and our attitudes in school.

Over the course of an academic year we acknowledge and learn about spiritual, moral, social and cultural events (SMSC). The calendar of events that we acknowledge, along with their impact, can be found in the document below.

SMSC Calendar 2023-2024

All schools are required by law to promote the fundamental British values of:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Teaching British values to children improves their SMSC development. British values underpin what it is to be a British citizen in a modern and diverse Britain, and promote moral and cultural understanding that celebrates the diversity of the UK.

Through our SMSC provision we:

  • Enable learners to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Enable learners to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England.
  • Encourage learners to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely.
  • Enable learners to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England.
  • Further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling learners to acquire an appreciation of and respect their own and other cultures.
  • Encourage and model respect for other people.
  • Encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect on the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.

At Allfarthing Primary School these are developed in the following way:
